Players, parents, supporters and officials recently gathered at the Club for the annual end of season awards night. The highly social evening was hosted by Lee Dobbins and supported by another excellent buffet from our sponsors Laveracks of Pocklington.
Selecting the winners in each category was a difficult task given that 2023 had produced some highly consistent contributions from a number of players across all of our Junior and Senior Teams, as well as a number of exceptional performances that regularly saw Pocklington players feature on the whole of Yorkshire ECB Honors Board.
The 2023 Season Award Winners were:
The ‘U18 Player of the Year’ (awarded by the senior team Captains) went to Fred Nightingale, who produced a number of fine all-round performances this season as well as frequently helping out with the junior sections of the club.
4th XI Captain Lee Dobbins reflected on a very solid season that had seen the team finish 5th in the league and provide quality opportunities for both junior players and new and existing senior players
4th XI Batter of the year was George Moorhouse, the highlight of his season being a spectacular 185 n.o. against Church Fenton CC 3rds. This is believed to be the all-time individual highest score for PCC
4th XI Bowler of the year was U15 Lewis Chaplin who had a remarkable season with both bat (scoring over 500 runs) and ball (finishing 4th in the list of wicket takers with 32)
3rd XI Captain Ian Scott (who actually finished the year as the club’s leading run scorer) detailed a great season for the 3rd XI that only saw them miss out on promotion when a genuine oversight in team selection resulted in them being docked 30 points. However, their season ended on a hugely positive note with a comprehensive victory in the Frank Stones Memorial Cup final against Ovington 2nd XI who play in the league above.
3rd XI Batter of the year was Jonny Sumner, who along with Ian Scott were the only batters in the club to post over 600 runs in the season
3rd XI Bowler of the year was Ben Davidson who on his return to Pocklington CC took an impressive 35 wickets at an average of just 15
Retiring 2nd XI Captain Ben Lister summarised an excellent season with the 2nd XI finishing in 3rd place to secure promotion from Division 3 Galtres.
2nd XI Batter of the year was cult hero Joss Room
2nd XI Bowler of the year was U15 Captain Will Atkinson in his first senior season for Pock CC adding to his success as the league winning U15’s Captain
Retiring 1st XI Captain Liam Serginson gave a passionate speech about how proud he had been to captain the club that he has loved since he was a junior player. It was a much improved season for the 1st XI, including an unbeaten streak of 10 games in the middle of the season, saw them finish in 5th in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire Premier League North.
1st XI Batter of the year was evergreen Neal Jackson for yet another highly consistent season scoring runs when it mattered
1st XI Bowler of the year was Connaire Brattan, who again finished as the Club's leading wicket taker with 41 wickets at 15 a piece
Last, but not least, the Neal Green Trophy for Player of the Season (as voted for by all current PCC senior players) went to Alex ‘Andrew’ Downey who, after a few seasons plagued by injury, is once again putting in match winning performances for the 1st XI.
Here’s to continued success in 2024 as Pocklington Cricket Club goes from strength to strength!
